Summer Conference Success

Conference and Events at Manchester Metropolitan University has had another successful summer season of events. During the past few months, the teams delivered 33 events, welcomed over 5,000 delegates and managed 3,000 bed nights in the Birley Residences.

The conference team work with colleagues, academics and external bodies to raise the profile of the University and the city.  In June, the King’s Fund Conference kicked off the season, followed by the delivery of successful bids to host three conferences during July including the GUADEC 2017 conference in Brooks, attracting over 220 international delegates to mark their 20th anniversary and the 17th Annual Meeting of the Tissue Cell Engineering Society in the Business School.  Later that month Birley welcomed more than 400 delegates to the 39th International School Psychological Association Annual Conference “thanks to Manchester Met Conference and Events team for organising such a successful conference. The Brooks building proved to be an ideal venue with outstanding facilities for presenters and excellent catering facilities. This ISPA conference was one of the best ever.” Peter Farrell, Prof Emeritus at University of Manchester, on behalf of the Local Organising Committee.

Earlier in the season, the Manchester Fashion Institute jointly hosted the Sixth Fibre International Recycling Symposium with the University of Bolton at Manchester Met for the first time, attracting delegates from Japan and United States of America.

And in September, the Researching, Advancing and Inspiring Student Engagement conference took place at Birley.

The Business School was transformed for the conference dinner. Attendees were impressed with the high standards of catering and service.

The conference team were pleased to welcome back returning customers.  Amongst them included Playful Learning 2017, which once again produced great feedback from both organisers and delegates, and BSides Manchester, who hosted their IT security conference in the Business School for the third consecutive year.

Hosting such events would not be possible without a team of dedicated staff from the Services Group – catering, campus services, residential services and information systems, who have provided great work over the summer months.
